COMIC: Social Media and Shallowness

This comic was originally written on February 7, 2022

I spoke about my concerns with these shorter-form contents, now for the positives. This type of content spreads like wildfire, and the publicity one can obtain is a great opportunity for the Gospel to be taught to a wide audience. Short encouraging Christian content is awesome, they don’t take a lot of mental powers to consume, and are a great way to brighten your day and strengthen your joy. People with legitimate attention span issues can also greatly benefit from shorter content. I’m just generally very thankful that Christians take advantage of so many media forms for the glory of God.

This is why I will never criticize this form of content as a whole. My aim in this comic is to caution those who regularly consume this type of content. I have made my case for the potential issue of staying in the shallow end for too long because it’s comfortable and requires no work. I also caution against a situation where one’s only Christian content intake is through these short-formed content. Many, only want positive affirmation rather than seeking a deeper understanding of God. To that, I say: you are missing out!

Short content can be awesome. Lots of great teachings and encouraging biblical messages are to be found there. But short videos can only give you so much. Those you can live without, but the reality today for many is that they are prioritizing online Christian content over the actual Word of God. Why? Perhaps it’s more entertaining, perhaps short feel-good messages are easier on the ear, or perhaps focusing and reading words is too much work. But at the end of the day, no form of content can boast the same effect of the living word of God (Hebrews 4:12) which should be an essential part of the Christian’s life. Without the Word of God, we starve ourselves spiritually! (Matthew 4:4)

So, I would suggest that you spend FAR more time in scripture and prayer than scrolling on social media (Psalm 1:2-3). Seriously, how much growth, joy, and peace are we missing out on? Totally ok to visit your favorite Christian influencer from time to time, but make sure that you are seeking Jesus at ALL times!
