As you can see in this comic, we have a comparison of what Danny from the past (who does not have a relationship with Jesus) thinks about himself vs what the Bible tells us about ourselves.
The Bible makes it quite clear to us: before we are saved and made right with God, we live in a pretty wretched state. To make matters worse, Romans 5:10 tells us that before we are reconciled (made right) with God, we were considered His ENEMIES. Which, when I look back at the life I was living before, is not false. Before the Lord entered my heart and mind, I did everything for myself, and the Bible makes it very clear that humans are by nature, sinful and corrupt, so the things I was doing were, by nature, sinful and corrupt, and are blatantly against God. I was, as Paul would say about himself, quite a wretched man who needed a change of heart really badly.
And then God saved me, taught me how to live, how to properly love, and how to walk the path of righteousness. I never realized just how helpless and sunken in sin I was. I think that’s a perspective we all need to remind ourselves of lest we get too prideful. Without Christ, we are all helpless sinners.
What I want us to realize is that all of us, before the Lord guided us to Himself, can be described like this:
“As it is written: “There is none righteous, no, not one; There is none who understands; There is none who seeks after God. They have all turned aside; They have together become unprofitable; There is none who does good, no, not one.””
Romans 3:10-12
That amazes me because God would reach down to people like us, and extend His mercy to us. Even to the point of dying for us on the cross so that we can be reconciled to Him. Wretched people that we are, but thanks be to God, Jesus’ blood saved us and cleansed us so that we can take part in God’s family! One day we will be free from this sinful wretched body, and take on the likeness of Christ, living in eternity with Him in heaven. Praise the Lord!
