Original commentary (from April 11, 2021):
"Disclaimer: People can do terrible things to others. I know many of you have experienced that before, but I haven’t. When someone does the unthinkable to another, it can be extremely difficult to forgive, and rightfully so, I do not expect you to heal your own scars overnight. Forgive doesn’t have to mean forget, please don’t forget that. However, God has the power to change hearts. Even if you might think something is just unforgivable, God has a way of showing you that it is. After all, He forgave you for the unforgivable, didn’t He? Please allow Him to do that work in your heart.
The Bible tells us: “You have heard the law that says the punishment must match the injury: ‘An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth.’ But I say, do not resist an evil person! If someone slaps you on the right cheek, offer the other cheek also. If you are sued in court and your shirt is taken from you, give your coat, too. If a soldier demands that you carry his gear for a mile, carry it two miles.”
Matthew 5:38-41
Read those words over and over carefully. Those things Jesus described, are unfair in today’s standard, aren’t they? Today’s culture will tell you to get back at the person as hard as you can, make sure that justice is served, after all, don’t let anyone take advantage of you, right?
Jesus tells otherwise. The Christian must learn to put to death the self, even when that means they will need to suffer some injustices and not say a word of vengeance. Too often we are offended by the smallest offense and we immediately seek vengeance. Why is that so prominent? Why is that somehow ok in so many Christian’s minds when God told us to not even harbor any of that in our hearts? Don’t be deceived, that hatred you let loose in your heart...that’s where murder can be birthed... Let God take the vengeance, He is the perfect judge and He will deal with each one as He sees fit.
Jesus came to deal with the heart, which is riddled with sin, desperately wicked from top to bottom. So as Christians who are supposed to be sanctified, who are supposed to be filled with the Spirit and righteousness of God, what are we filling our hearts with? I hope it’s peace!"
