Note: Now that I know how prosperity preacher abuse this Biblical event, I am far more careful with the way I use this to apply to my own life. I stil stand by what I said, God DOES help us overcome challenges, ACCORDING TO HIS WILL. He is no genie, not every little thing in your life is a Goliath.
To find out more about this concept, and how prosperity preachers abuse this text, I highly recommend "American Gospel: Christ Alone". You can purchase and watch it here
Original commentary (from November 17th, 2019):
"Sometimes in life, we encounter an obstacle so gigantic it may seem impossible to overcome them at all. The Israelite army felt the same way when they saw the nine-foot-tall Philistine soldier, Goliath. The Israelite army could do nothing but shout and insult, no one dared to actually approach the giant. The army of Israel was no match against this towering obstacle. They ran away with their tails behind their backs when the giant challenged them.
But what about the army of God? David understood this concept. David understood that Goliath was not only throwing insults against the Israelite army, he was throwing insults at God. David refused to wear armor and wield a sword. David knew that he did not need those things when God is all he needed to put his trust in.
David was just a shepherd boy, sure he may have fought off lions and bears, but he was younger than all of the soldiers at the camp, and he never had any real fighting experience with a human. However, God used him just as he was, in his shepherd clothes, and with his trusty sling. He spared little effort in defeating Goliath.
Sometimes we may encounter a challenge that stands so tall that we want to run as far away from it as possible. Sometimes others who are not afraid to shout at us will challenge our beliefs, our reactions might just be the same one as the Israelite army, to escape. We may think we do not have enough knowledge, strength, charisma, or possessions to overcome those obstacles.
When we think that way, let us think of the story of David. No matter how weak we are, God is always there behind us. Trust in him and go forth without fear, and he will for sure help us and use us just as we are. That doesn’t mean we shouldn't strive to be better, of course, but we shouldn’t be afraid when we are not good enough either. “But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me. That is why, for Christ’s sake, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong.” 2 Corinthians 12: 9-10"
