This comic is a letter to myself. Feel free to forward this letter to yourself if you need it. I’m tired of this pathetic addiction to sin. I just want to be free, to feel joy once more.
This I will never compromise on: sin is deadly serious and harmful. Sin is failure to love God, and failure to love others, for God alone is good and His ways are righteous. Sin is the reason why death came into the world, sin is why creation groans, sin is why the world is not as it should be, and sin is why humanity is subject to God’s wrath. Sin is vile, with no exceptions.
I have a lot of mental struggles. I won’t share them, I’m not here to complain, but it’s those struggles that make me sin day after day. When I’m by myself, or when I’m with people, I do the things that I know I ought not to do (James 4:17). Because in those moments, I love myself more than God… I wanted an escape…
I want to stop sinning. Sin makes me weak. Sin makes me depressed. Sin makes me angry. Sin makes me sad. Sin makes me anxious. Sin is the root of all suffering. But somehow, I always forget that. I always find a way back to my sins. Aren’t you confused sometimes? Don’t you feel like something is wrong? If the Son has set us free from sin, then why do I feel enslaved still? Well, as Christians, we are free, free from the price we have to pay for sin. But I am still at war with my old self.
In Romans 7, Paul expressed the same feelings. He wants to stop sinning, but there is still something in him that pulls him back, even though his new nature that has been freed from the grasp of sin is desperately trying to fight back. In the end, Paul comes up with the conclusion that Jesus is still able to save this wretched man.
One day, we will be completely free from sin. One day, we will be changed, a new body, a new mind, and a new form of being where we will take on God’s likeness. (1 Corinthians 15:12, 1 John 3:2). But for now, we still need to endure the oppression of sin, but with Christ and His Holy Spirit, He provides ways for us to win that victory even now. And of course, the ultimate victory is already won at the cross.
